Basic Function

HF Sinclair Asphalt located in Albuquerque, NM is seeking a Maintenance Technician. This position facilitates and executes the safe, reliable, and environmentally sound maintenance of terminal equipment through effective planning, scheduling, and execution of routine, capital, and outage maintenance activities. Uses independent judgment and discretion to identify, prioritize, and schedule maintenance work within the assigned area of responsibility. Works collaboratively with maintenance contractors, counterparts, operations, and other stakeholders to improve the reliability and availability of operating equipment within the asphalt terminal.


This position is responsible for performing and overseeing maintenance activities within an asphalt terminal and around a wide range of process equipment, including but not limited to boilers, air compressors, blowers, heaters, heat exchangers, pumps, load racks, rail platforms, chemical and asphalt storage tanks and general tank farm equipment.


The role involves executing maintenance repairs and assigned tasks with limited supervision while improving maintenance effectiveness through the development of safe, reliable, and cost effective repair strategies. This includes creating job plans, coordinating energy isolation requirements, and developing maintenance schedules.

Job Duties

(functions considered essential as defined by ADA)

• Observe, monitor and repair rotating equipment; conduct routine field walk-throughs; perform spill cleanup; complete routine repairs to small-bore piping; perform painting; and assist other team members as needed
• Assist with and perform equipment shutdowns, start-ups, and energy isolation procedures
• Coordinate maintenance work activities with outside contractors
• Assist in and support all maintenance events and outages, including planning and execution
• Identify required tools, materials, and resources needed to complete pre-identified tasks and develop daily work scopes
• Utilize hand tools and specialized maintenance tools safely and effectively
• Prepare work notifications, execute work orders; ensure work sites are properly prepared for repairs; oversee and support repair activities
• Perform work in elevated areas, confined spaces, and other restricted or cramped environments, as required
• Work independently with minimal or no direct supervision
• Perform additional duties such as equipment lubrication, cleanup, and general housekeeping
• Ensure management is informed of any potential issues, shortfalls, or problems related to daily assignments or maintenance activities

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion.

Experience

A minimum of 5 years of maintenance background and general knowledge of maintenance protocol is required.

Education Level

A minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Required Skills

Candidates must have a strong background in rotating equipment maintenance, repair and troubleshooting along with construction knowledge gained either through work experience or technical school training. Demonstrate ability to optimize equipment reliability and availability while functioning effectively in a team atmosphere. Ability and willingness to operate industrial equipment such as forklift, skid steer, manlift operation and in general any duties required to support and contribute to an efficient maintenance organization. Good verbal/written communication, computer literate, good mathematical & problem solving skills, ability to read & interpret various instructions, procedures, rules, and regulations. Knowledge of and commitment to safe work practices and regulatory compliance. Must have the ability to enter manways on tanks, elevated areas, confined spaces, and other restricted or cramped environments and around elevated product temperatures. Perform work of consistent quality and visual acuity (including color, depth perception, and field of vision). Team player, self-starter, independent worker, good time management and analytical skills and priority setting ability. Successful candidate will be on an on-call schedule.

Work Conditions

Office and Asphalt Terminal/Industrial environment based with up to 5% travel by land and air is required. Work is performed at asphalt terminal facilities within the petroleum industry and may involve exposure to chemicals, pressure vessels, storage tanks, rotating equipment, confined spaces, elevated work surfaces, and driver based environments. Required to work in confined spaces and elevated environments as part of normal job duties.

Work may be performed outdoors and is subject to all weather conditions, temperature extremes, and varying road conditions. Must be able to work occasional weekends, after hours callouts, and shifts ranging from 8–10 hours as operational needs require. Must be available to respond to plant-related emergencies and be accessible after hours during critical business situations.


Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a drug test, physical examination, and background check prior to start date. Participation in an ongoing random drug and alcohol testing program is required.
