Title:  Site Heat Transfer Specialist

Basic Function

HF Sinclair in Anacortes, WA is seeking a Site Heat Transfer Specialist. The primary purpose of this role is to provide technical support and leadership to drive the safe, reliable, and efficient performance of the Refinery Fired Equipment. The Specialist will consult with others on matters involving operations, control, and integrity of Fired Equipment. The Specialist is expected to provide Operators with training as needed on furnace operation as well as work with Production, Engineering, Process, Control Systems and Pressure Equipment Integrity (PEI) Staff to ensure safe, reliable operations. The selected individual will also coordinate and obtain the necessary thermal imaging information.

Job Duties

  • Be the Focal Point for Fired Heater / Boiler combustion issues.
  • Conduct audits of the process heater operation (both independent and cross functional).
  • Work proactively with Production, Maintenance, Technical, Environmental and Inspection personnel to assure combustion issues are being properly addressed.
  • Perform Thermography Inspections, as needed, using the site IR camera. Complete data analysis and create informative reports to PEI, Operations, and Process Engineering.
  • Provide technical support to operators for Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) monitoring rounds on fired heaters.
  • Identify fouled or plugged burner tips, flame impingement, heater refractory condition, burner tile condition, burner mechanical condition, and flame condition (excess or insufficient O2 and flame distribution). Notify Production of any unusual findings.
  • Maintain a Proactive Technical Monitoring (PTM) Workbook for each area of responsibility.
  • Maintain proactive monitoring variables, trends, tools, and the overall proactive monitoring plan for fired heaters / flares to facilitate the performance of the Ensure Safe Production (ESP) process.
  • Recommend instrumentation/analyzer upgrades basis, current Best Practices, and specific heat transfer threats.
  • Provide oversight on new projects to assure appropriate combustion equipment is selected.
  • Develop Turnaround scope for Boilers / Fired Equipment.
  • Develop training program and conduct training for Production on efficient and safe fired heater operations. Consult on and teach combustion issues / troubleshooting within the Production organization and Technical community.
  • Be an active member of the HF Sinclair Fired Equipment Technical Network Team.
  • Assist Site Energy Focal Point in performing monthly EII calculation.
  • Help identify new energy tactics & in some cases be the lead for Tactic(s).
  • Provide training to operations as needed on various KPI’s associated with the Energy Management System to help drive sustainability and accountability.
  • Support abnormal / upset situations and turnarounds which may require nights and extended durations within fatigue management plans for a 24x7 facility.
  • Participate in and/or Facilitate root cause investigations.
  • Communicate applicable HF Sinclair Heater Incident Investigation Learnings with Site and develop implementation plan to close gaps.
  • Lead discipline specific Management of Change (MOC) reviews.
  • Participate as necessary in Unit PHAs, Bowtie Analysis Reviews, and Corrosion Control Document (CCD) Reviews. 

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time, are at the supervisor’s sole and complete discretion.


A minimum of three years of engineering work experience or a minimum of five years of relevant industry experience is required. 


Preferred Experience

Experience operating, troubleshooting, and/or optimizing fired equipment is desired.

Education Level

A minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent, is required.

Required Skills

  • Working knowledge of fired heater / boiler / combustion concepts and the ability to apply this knowledge analytically. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, strong verbal communication skills, and ability to simplify large amounts of data into compelling recommendations. 
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups throughout the refinery.
  • Strong interpersonal, time-management and organizational skills.
  • Strong spreadsheet and word processing applications knowledge.
  • Ability to teach and mentor to diverse groups on a variety of discipline topics. 
  • Knowledge of various process hazard analysis and root cause analysis methodologies.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility


Work Conditions

Office and plant based with up to 10% travel required.  Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, lifting and/or carrying up to 50 lbs, climbing up to 200 ft, perceiving color differences, required to wear personal protective equipment as needed and a respirator in some situations. Job conditions may require twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching or grasping.  Work outside of traditional daytime/weekday schedule will be required during some periods.  Off-hours on-call support will be required, and this may require reporting to the facility off hours.
