Title: Environmental Specialist

Basic Function
HF Sinclair is seeking a Environmental Specialist in Dallas, TX who will be responsible to conduct environmental assignments and duties for the assigned Department. Internally considered as a technical advisor and subject matter expert in areas described below.
Job Duties
- Coordinates environmental programs and provides environmental assistance to business units
- Ensures environmental programs comply with the applicable federal, state, and local government laws
- Advises management of environmental issues and activities necessary to ensure compliance
- Proposes environmental policies, programs and initiatives
- Represents the company to governmental environmental agencies, the public, and trade/professional associations
- Ensures environmental considerations are factored into corporate planning and the capital budget process
- Tracks environmental performance measures and recommends parameters
- Provides documentation and environmental analysis for management review
- Prepares comments on proposed Environmental regulations, and maintains involvement with trade associations as appropriate
- Stays current with applicable Federal, State, and local regulations governing RCRA (waste management e.g., hazardous waste, universal waste, used oil, non-hazardous waste, regulated medical waste), CWA (water and wastewater), OPA (SPCC, FRP), SDWA (UIC Wells), NEPA (COE permits, WOTUS), TSCA, EPCRA/CERCLA reporting compliance
- Updates the company’s program and procedures when regulations change or are modified
- Coordinates with site program leads from all business units and facilitates technical team meetings and training.
- Coordinate with site staff on permit applications and renewals and review draft permits issued by regulatory agencies.
- Reviews and maintains company waste disposal/recycling policies in coordination with Legal. Identifies and reviews disposal/recycling facilities, brokers, and transporters for inclusion in the company approved waste management/recycling program and assists business units in their use.
May include some or all of the following:
- Participates in third party compliance audits of company’s facilities
- Participates in emergency response and cleanup activities
- Directs the work of site environmental staff and technicians
- Lead corporate initiatives such as systems and tools development towards advancement of responsible programs
- Interfaces with operation departments to communicate and define their role in compliance efforts
- Interfaces with regulatory agencies to ensure understanding of, and compliance with, all applicable environmental regulations and requirements
Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their superior, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion.
Experience
A minimum of 8-10 years of extensive industry and on-the-job experience is required
Education Level
A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in environmental sciences or a combination of relevant experience and education in lieu of degree.
Preferred Education
A Master’s Degree is preferred.
Required Skills
- Ability to lead and train a small group of employees in a Technical Expert capacity.
- Special training in hazardous waste regulations and DOT Hazmat Shipping, and a Certification in OSHA Hazmat may be required depending on assignment.
- Advanced ability to provide analyses of proposed and final CWA, OPA, RCRA, TSCA, EPCRA, CERCLA, NEPA, SDWA regulations that significantly impact operations and/or compliance status and application of these regulations to business units.
- Adept at making hazardous waste determinations through process knowledge and analytical testing.
- Is knowledgeable of applicable regulatory exclusions from the definition of solid and hazardous waste and can put those to practice.
- Working knowledge of oil refining processes (process flow diagrams/mechanical flow sheets, chemical phase separations, and reactions).
- Ability to effectively communicate with others, both written and verbal communication.
- Advanced reading and writing skills, with the ability to perform complex mathematical calculations.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility
May be responsible for the supervision of up to approximately five employees in addition to outside contractors, depending upon assigned subsidiary.
Work Conditions
Office and plant based with travel 25-50% of the time, note - at times it may be more, required by land and air. Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, out-of-doors environment including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, and rotating equipment. Required to work in all temperatures including outdoors. Subject to varying road and weather conditions.
