Basic Function

HollyFrontier Corporation is seeking a Senior Turnaround Event Manager to be based in either Artesa, NM, Woods Cross, UT, Salt Lake City, UT or Dallas, TX. This role is responsible for overseeing and directing all Turnaround activities for high complexity turnaround events. This role will work in collaboration with key stake holders including Operations, Capital Projects, Inspection, Health and Safety, Environmental, Maintenance, and Process Engineering to plan and accomplish all Turnaround Activities.

Job Duties

  • Supports the VP, Global Turnarounds in the identification and implementation of best practices across HollyFrontier.
  • Fully accountable for overall event including shutdown and startup.
  • Manages and coordinates all preparation activities associated with shutdown, startup and decommissioning consistent with turnaround milestone schedule.
  • Final decision rights for operational issues associated with Turnaround Event Command.
  • Coordinates refinery-wide issues as they relate to shut down and startup activities to support turnaround objectives.
  • Updates the turnaround plan as necessary during the execution of the turnaround.
  • Accountable for compliance of the Navi track milestones in the turnaround phase schedule.
  • Leads the facilitation of a detailed oil-flow plan that integrates with execution schedule.
  • Owns the Oil to Oil schedule.
  • Facilitates Capital project integration into turnaround event planning and execution.
  • Defines Ops leads period of ownership in shutdown and start-up process.
  • Ensures turnaround readiness, cost and execution status is communicated in real time to management and other key stakeholders.
  • Oversees the quality of work, safety, environmental soundness, and overall performance of the entire workforce in the turnaround organization
  • Develops and maintains HollyFrontier turnaround management standards and processes.
  • Provides both technical and leadership support for low complexity turnaround events lead by site based event managers.


Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their manager, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion


A minimum of 15 years of industrial maintenance experience and, depending on assignment, with at least 7 years of turnaround execution supervision are required.

Education Level

A minimum of a Bachelors' degree, OR an equivalent combination of education and work experience, is required.

Required Skills

Ability to lead and direct a large work force for the execution of a high complexity turnaround.  Strong interpersonal and decision making skills and ability to build technical and operational capability. Good spreadsheet, database and word processing applications knowledge. Strong written and verbal communication, negotiating, time-management and organizational skills.  Ability to communicate effectively with others and influence multiple operations.  Advanced reading and writing skills and the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. Ability to work in a matrixed organizational structure.


Preferred Skills: 

A significant amount of experience in the energy industry and special training in project management.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

Responsible for the supervision of approximately 2 to 4 direct reports. During turnarounds, could be responsible for up to 10 direct reports. 

Work Conditions

Office based with refinery environment exposure and travel up to 75% of the time by land or air.  Up to 60% of time will be required to work in petroleum refinery environment.  Subject to all weather and varying road conditions.
