Title:  Lab Technician II

Basic Function

HollyFrontier Refining and Marketing, located in Glendale, Arizona, is seeking a Lab Technician II. This position is responsible for finished product quality control and specification compliance testing including calibration and standardization of test equipment and complex laboratory tasks. As needed, train others in conducting various test methods.   

Job Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: (functions considered essential as defined by ADA)

  • Conducts product quality control and specification compliance testing and may train others in laboratory testing methods
  • Enters lab results in proper databases and communicates results to assigned area’s management and other personnel to direct formulation adjustments
  • Ensures work area is kept clean and organized
  • Conducts calibration and standardization of testing instruments and ancillary test equipment
  • Executes required assigned area’s Health Safety & Environmental programs and initiatives

May include some or all of the following:

  • Execute requirements of HAC Quality Manual and related quality systems
  • Conduct experiments aimed at securing and verifying asphalt supply and other special assignments critical to HAC business
  • Conducts proficiency sample testing
  • Collects and distributes samples to customers and others

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion.


A minimum of two years of related material testing experience is required.    


Education Level

A minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent is required.


Required Skills

Intermediate level algebra and proficiency with spreadsheet and word-processing software applications. Good mechanical ability and understanding of operational principles of assigned area’s laboratory testing instruments. Ability to effectively communicate with others, both written and verbal communication. Ability to complete all required classroom and CBT training. Exhibit superior Z-scores on proficiency testing programs. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, basic reading and writing skills.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

May be required to lead the work of less experienced technicians. 

Work Conditions

Office based with up 10% travel by land and air required. Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, out-of-doors, and driver based environment including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, and rotating equipment. Subject to all temperatures, weather, and varying road conditions. May be required to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and a rotating schedule required.
