Basic Function

Petro-Canada Lubricants Inc. (PCLI), an HF Sinclair company is seeking a Team Leader of Technical Services Engineering. Reporting to the Director Engineering, the Technical Services Team Lead is responsible for the development of operational strategies to optimize throughputs and yields while providing technical support and input to operations to ensure a safe, reliable and profitable operation.  Leads unit test runs, unit performance runs and optimization initiatives.  Responsible for oversight, support and continuous improvement of plant automation systems, advanced process control optimization, and process information systems.  Provides guidance and mentorship for the development of technical personnel.

Job Duties

  • Guide the Technical Services Team in delivering strong customer service to the organization
  • Develop unit operating guidelines and control strategies to optimize throughput and yields
  • Provide technical support to troubleshoot operational and control issues
  • Ensure compliance with current standards, regulations, laws and directives for safe operations
  • Provide technical support for tasks such as operational procedure reviews, management of change (MOC) execution, risk reviews, and bottleneck identification
  • Ensure correct preparation and application of all management of change processes
  • Ensure unit health and optimization through the development and monitoring of KPIs, operating premises, and other tools, benchmarking, and test runs
  • Ensure Advanced Process Controls deliver value to the business, seek and drive optimization opportunities
  • Maintain effective stewardship and management of controls, process information, and other technology to ensure safe, secure, reliable, sustainable, and cost effective solutions
  • Coordinate Tech Services preparations for Turnarounds
  • Effective management of contracts and expense budget
  • Plan, delegate, communicate, and manage work assignments for the team
  • Foster strong teamwork and collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure PCLI objectives are achieved
  • Ensure safety and quality in design for all assigned projects, meeting all PSM and MOC requirements
  • Identify and execute continuous improvement opportunities within the team and the plant
  • Promote compliance and effective use of safe work practices, procedures and programs
  • Build strong capability in team through assignments, training, and knowledge sharing
  • Evaluate and communicate performance management requirements of direct reports
  • Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion

Experience

  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive work experience in the chemical engineering discipline is required, preferably onsite in the oil and gas or petro-chemical industries
  • Experience in an operating plant is an asset
  • Troubleshooting experience on refinery unit operations is preferred
  • Experience working in Oil and Gas or Petrochemical is preferred

Education Level

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Chemical Engineering, is required
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario or equivalent/transferrable

Required Skills

  • Advanced ability to lead, coach, and direct the work of others
  • Strong interpersonal, time-management, and organizational skills
  • Strong understanding of refining processes and economics
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to lead or work collaboratively in teams in developing plans to achieve long term objectives or implement business strategies
  • Experience and demonstrated ability in conducting root cause analyses and using the recommendations to impart systemic and lasting change
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and guide Operations
  • Strong understanding of management of change processes with the ability to achieve a high level of buy-in from the larger organization
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form
  • Knowledge of control systems, advanced process control, and optimization

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

  • Responsible for the direct supervision of approximately 8 employees as well as engineering and specialty contractors

Work Conditions

  • Office and plant based with up to 20% travel by land and air required
  • Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, out-of-doors environment including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, and rotating equipment
  • Work can take place near moving mechanical parts and/or rotating equipment with high noise levels
  • Subject to all temperatures including outdoor weather conditions. Subject to all weather and varying road conditions
