Basic Function

Provides oversight and management of all laboratory activities, projects and research both internal and external for the organization and/or site assigned. Responsible for ensuring all resources are allocated and are aligned with key priorities and overall business initiatives, and to encourage innovation and exploration of next generation product opportunities.

Job Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: (functions considered essential as defined by ADA)

  • Mentor and develop Chemist team to ensure future resources within the laboratory team
  • Lead research and development projects for the lab
  • Work with outside labs to ensure compliance with our quality standards and practices
  • Provide technical guidance to the organization on all past, current and future products
  • Ensure that the best methods and instrumentation are researched and investigated for use in the plant processes
  • Investigate and analyze statistical data for emerging trends in product lines and feedstock
  • Direct supervision of the Product Specialist Manager, Manufacturing Technology Manager and Quality Control Supervisor
  • Report regularly on the progress of research and product development programs and keep stakeholders informed on significant issues
  • Maintain contacts with major customers, suppliers or industries to identify product needs or influence future product specifications and standards
  • Manage budgets
  • Responsible for compliance to established Quality Systems and Quality Improvement as well as departmental safety standards. Document and maintain records.
  • Generate, handle, and/or otherwise manage hazardous and non-hazardous waste

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their superior or other local VP’s or managers, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion.


8+ years and Exceptional Success in a variety positions in the lab or a related industry or facility

Leadership and Supervisory training and experience


Preferred Experience:

A minimum of 15 years of Lab supervision, management and technical expertise and/or experience in the oil and gas industry is preferred.

Education Level

A minimum of a bachelor’s Degree in a Chemistry or closely related scientific degree is required. 


Preferred Education Level:

A Master’s Degree or MBA is preferred.

Required Skills

Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to manage staff on key priorities and reallocate resources as required. Innovative and technically savvy. Results and customer focused. Strong organizational skills including multi-tasking, decision making, deadline focus, and prioritizing. Excellent demonstrated problem solving skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills and presentation skills. Strong attention to detail. Knowledge of statistics and the ability to utilize this knowledge to explain findings. Solid foundation in analytical chemistry. Experience with or working knowledge of the following analytical instrumentation/ methods: Wet chemistry analysis, automatic titrator, HPLC, NMR, FTIR, AA, GC, GC/MS, UV-VIS. 

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

Responsible for the direct supervision of 3 supervisory level employees as well as indirect supervision of chemists and technical associates.

Work Conditions

Office based with up to 25% travel by land and air required. Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, out-of-doors environment, and driver-based environment. Including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, rotating equipment, fumes and airborne particles. Subject to all temperatures, weather and varying road conditions. May be required to work extended hours and regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and varying road conditions.

Physical Requirements

Job conditions require sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, reaching or grasping, lifting and/or carrying up to 50lbs, ability to operate and drive all assigned company vehicles at company standard insurance rates is essential, valid state driver’s license and proof of insurance required, perceiving color differences, and wearing personal protective equipment (beards not permitted). Job conditions may require standing, walking, and twisting, stooping, crouching, and kneeling.
