BASIC FUNCTION:

Provide oversight, management and leadership of all laboratory activities, projects and research for the Petrolia site of HF Sinclair’s Lubricants and Specialties business, which focuses on Sonneborn branded products and technology. Ensure resources and effort are aligned with business priorities and initiatives, focused on the categories of Operations support, existing product support, customer technical engagement, product development and research into next generation product opportunities.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: (functions considered essential as defined by ADA)

  • Direct supervision of Petrolia product development, manufacturing technology and quality control managers
  • Coach and develop the extended Petrolia Technology Team of approximately 10-25 technical professionals
  • Lead and drive technical support of Petrolia Operations and existing products
  • Actively engage to ensure that the Technology Team and relevant stakeholders cooperate and bring their experience and expertise to solve challenges and address opportunities in manufacturing and products at the Petrolia site
  • Lead and drive new product development appropriate for Petrolia, working with stakeholders such as Marketing, New Business Development and Sales, at Petrolia and at other sites
  • Establish and maintain contacts and engage with key customers, suppliers or industries to identify product needs, influence product requirements and solve problems
  • Be an active member of the HF Sinclair Lubricants and Specialties Technology Leadership Team (TLT) and contribute to TLT objectives across the extended technology organization
  • Understand technology capabilities and expertise of other HF Sinclair Lubricants and Specialties sites and teams and use them as appropriate for Petrolia needs and opportunities
  • Extend Petrolia capabilities and expertise to other HF Sinclair Lubricants and Specialties sites and teams and to broader technology activities to meet needs and opportunities
  • Communicate Petrolia technology activity to meet the expectations of on-site stakeholders and appropriately for non-Petrolia stakeholders to follow and understand
  • Identify and propose continuous improvement initiatives
  • Responsible for compliance to established Quality Systems and Quality Improvement
  • Document and maintain records
  • Work with outside labs to ensure compliance with our quality standards and practices
  • Manage budgets
  • Ensure safe working practices and conditions and comply with departmental safety standards
  • Manage generation, handling and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste
  • Reports to VP – Technology and New Business Development, HF Sinclair Lubricants and Specialties

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • 8 Years with a record of success in positions in the lab or a related industry or facility. 
  • Leadership and supervisory training and experience

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • 15 Years of lab work, supervision, and management.
  • Experience in specialty chemicals, lubricants or oil industries. 
  • Experience with Sonneborn’s products and technology types and markets. 
  • Operations support experience. 
  • New product development experience.

REQUIRED EDUCATIONAL LEVEL:

A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a Chemistry or closely related discipline.

PREFERRED EDUCATIONAL LEVEL:

A Master’s Degree or Ph. D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related discipline.

  • Experience with or working knowledge of the following analytical instrumentation/methods: wet chemistry analysis, automatic titrator, HPLC, NMR, FTIR, AA, GC, GC/MS, UV-VIS.

SUPERVISORY/MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for the direct supervision of 3 supervisory level employees as well as indirect supervision of chemists and technical staff.

WORK CONDITIONS:

Office based with up to 25% travel by land and air required. Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, out-of-doors environment, and driver-based environment. Including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, rotating equipment, fumes and airborne particles. Subject to all temperatures, weather and varying road conditions. May be required to work extended hours and regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and varying road conditions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Job conditions require sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, reaching or grasping, lifting and/or carrying up to 50lbs, ability to operate and drive all assigned company vehicles at company standard insurance rates is essential, valid state driver’s license and proof of insurance required, perceiving color differences, and wearing personal protective equipment (beards not permitted). Job conditions may require standing, walking, and twisting, stooping, crouching, and kneeling.
