Basic Function

HF Sinclair in Sinclair, WY is seeking a Metal Trades Tech who performs skilled pipefitting, boilermaker work, welding, fabrication, and maintenance work on refinery process equipment and piping systems. Responsible for the installation, repair, modification, and inspection of piping, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, structural steel, tanks, and related refinery equipment. Works safely and efficiently to support refinery reliability, operational excellence, and regulatory compliance.

 

Job Duties

(functions considered essential as defined by ADA)

  • Fabricates, installs, repairs, and maintains refinery piping systems, valves, flanges, supports, and associated equipment.
  • Performs welding utilizing SMAW, GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), FCAW, and oxy-acetylene cutting processes as required.
  • Repairs and maintains pressure vessels, boilers, heat exchangers, towers, furnaces, tanks, and structural steel.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, isometrics, P&IDs, welding procedures, drawings, and specifications.
  • Lays out, measures, cuts, fits, aligns, and assembles piping and structural components.
  • Performs field fabrication, equipment modifications, and shop fabrication activities.
  • Conducts welding and fabrication work in compliance with refinery standards, ASME, API, and applicable industry codes.
  • Utilizes precision measuring instruments and alignment tools.
  • Operates hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, cutting equipment, and fabrication machinery.
  • Performs rigging, lifting, and material handling activities utilizing hoists, chain falls, cranes, and other lifting devices.
  • Supports maintenance turnarounds, shutdowns, capital projects, and emergency repair work.
  • Completes inspections of completed work to ensure quality, reliability, and code compliance.
  • Maintains work records, inspection documentation, and maintenance reports.
  • Follows all safety, environmental, and operating procedures, including permit requirements, confined space entry, hot work, and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Communicates effectively with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and contractor personnel.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SPECIAL ASSIGNMENTS

  • Participates in refinery outages, turnarounds, and emergency response activities as required.
  • Assists with equipment reliability improvements and continuous improvement initiatives.

 

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion.

Experience

Five (5) years of experience in industrial maintenance, refinery, petrochemical, mining, power generation, or heavy industrial environments preferred. Experience in pipe fabrication, vessel repair, welding, and structural steel work preferred.

 

Education Level

A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED  

 

Required Skills

Journeyman-level pipefitting, boilermaker, welding, or related industrial maintenance experience. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications. Knowledge of industrial piping systems, welding techniques, and fabrication practices. Knowledge of safe work practices in an industrial environment. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Basic computer skills.

Work Conditions

Outdoors environment based. Petroleum refinery, plant environment, including not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, and tanks, rotating equipment, and working in confined spaces.   Able to work in adverse weather conditions.  Required to work a flexible schedule, (e.g. 12 shift schedules, overtime, weekends, callouts or holidays).
