Basic Function
Conducts non-routine to complex chemistry/laboratory assignments for assigned Department under minimal supervision. May lead the work of others depending on location.
Job Duties
- Samples and conducts all levels of tests and trains others to perform standard tests on raw materials, intermediates, and finished products
- Ensures testing is carried out per established methods/procedures
- Ensures quality of work through quality assurance testing and documentation, and analysis
- Records, reports, and certifies results
- Develops new methods/procedures
- Diagnoses laboratory equipment malfunctions, solving problems and fixing laboratory equipment and machinery
- Performs routine to complex and corrective maintenance and calibrations on laboratory equipment
- Creates QA documents and protocols
- Supports other departments in sampling, testing, and compliance monitoring
- Maintains lab supplies and equipment (orders supplies)
- Operates Chromatographs
- Ships samples designated as hazardous and verify hazardous samples are shipped in conformance with the CFR
- Monitors drinking water streams for compliance
- Checks emissions compliance (state certified)
- Works with outside testing laboratories to coordinate special requests and compliance testing
- Monitors process control of plant streams, purity of products and composition of fuel gases, liquefied petroleum products, and various levels of Hydrogen
- Analyzes data, document results and ensure laboratory data is maintained
- Provides support to operations with product blending
Experience
A minimum of five years of on-the-job experience are required.
Education Level
A minimum of a Bachelors Degree of Science in Chemistry or related field is required.
Required Skills
Advanced knowledge of laboratory testing and ability to apply this knowledge. Working knowledge of petroleum products and testing. Ability to train and lead the work of others. Ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations, intermediate reading and writing skills, ability to effectively communicate with others, both written and verbal communication.
Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility
May lead the work of others regularly. May be designated as relief lab supervisor if needed.
Work Conditions
Office based with occasional refinery visits, and with up to 10% travel by land and air required. Petroleum refinery/industrial environment including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, and rotating equipment. Subject to all weather, and varying road conditions.

Physical Requirements
Job conditions require standing, making visual precise hand and finger movement, making visual inspections, reaching or grasping, wearing personal protective equipment. Job conditions may require walking, sitting, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, talking or hearing, lifting and/or carrying up to 50lbs, pushing and/or pulling up to 50lbs, and the ability to safely move hearvier items using appropriate equipment or team assistance, and perceiving color difference.
