Title: Laboratory Technician

Basic Function
HF Sinclair Tulsa Refining LLC is seeking a Laboratory Technician who, under minimal supervision, is responsible for conducting physical and chemical testing on crude oil, refinery process streams, and finished fuels products and/or finished lubes and wax plant products as well as the associated quality control samples. This position is accountable for the certification of finished products in accordance with ASTM and ISO specifications and requirements.
Job Duties
• Routinely conduct product specification and quality control testing in an accurate and timely manner, and ensure results are correct and sensible when reported.
• Work with testing instruments, learn and understand their use and how to properly care for, troubleshoot, and maintain instruments for data reliability.
• Execute the requirements of our Quality system, maintaining documentation for traceability.
• Read, learn, and understand our policies, procedures, and ASTM testing methods.
• View, learn, and understand computer-based training, SQC practices, and LIMS operation.
• Keep the lab clean, stocked, and organized, while adhering to and completing assigned duties related to Health, Safety and Environmental requirements. This includes making chemical solutions, cleaning and preparing equipment, blending and retaining samples, and properly disposing of samples and materials.
• Perform any special duties or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor or lab director as determined from time-to-time and in their sole discretion.
• Exercise Ownership, Teamwork, and Inclusion to work well with others, especially when unscheduled workload or laboratory workload shifts due to refinery needs.
• Complete and maintain all required ongoing training for Safety and Integrity while maintaining a safe workplace by stopping and reporting any health, safety, or environmental issues.
• Properly wear the required PPE in designated areas, and hold coworkers accountable for their safety, adhering to company policies for the workplace.
Experience
A minimum of three years’ laboratory, refinery or industry experience is required.
Education Level
A minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
Preferred Education:
An associates or bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or related science field is preferred.
Required Skills
Intermediate level algebra and proficiency with spreadsheet and word-processing software applications. Good mechanical ability and understanding of operational principles of assigned area’s laboratory testing instruments. Ability to effectively communicate with others, both written and verbal communication. Ability to complete all required classroom and CBT training. Ability to achieve high proficiency scores. May require good supervisory skills depending on location. Basic reading and writing skills, and ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

Physical Requirements
This work is in a petroleum refinery setting Job conditions include wearing proper PPE while constantly standing, walking, sitting, stooping, bending, crouching, talking, hearing, making visual inspections and color determinations, making precise hand and finger movements while reaching or grasping, safely lifting and/or carrying up to 50lbs, safely pushing and/or pulling up to 50lbs, and the ability to safely move heavier items using appropriate equipment or team assistance. This work requires eye/hand dexterity, the ability to use a computer, ability to read, understand and apply operating procedures to perform job duties, ability to make quick decisions in a high-pressure environment along with mental capacity to make quick and accurate decisions. Ability to self-evacuate in case of emergency outside facility parameter. Safely operating company vehicles with a valid driver’s license.
