Basic Function

HF Sinclair is is seeking a Product Specialist based out of our Tulsa, Oklahoma refinery. The Product Specialist is responsible for product development and providing technical expertise for lubricants and specialty products (e.g. base oils, process oils, waxes and/or aromatic extracts).  Develops products to meet customer requirements that align with corporate growth strategies.  Plans and coordinates technical projects to ensure objectives are accomplished within prescribed timeframe.  May direct or lead the work of others to accomplish these tasks.

Job Duties

  • Recognized as a product specialist/expert by internal members of the organization and by some members of the Industry
  • Develop formulations for a range of lubricant products and validate their performance
  • Develop expertise in lubrication science and applications (including process oil applications)
  • Apply a range of scientific principles accurately and effectively to support research and technical support activities
  • Assist with laboratory work which will include preparing samples for analysis, executing physical testing and coordinating testing with external laboratories
  • Responsible for obtaining data, preparing tables and analysis of data for review with supervisor or senior Product Specialists
  • Provide guidance to more junior Product Specialists and taking responsibility to direct work of Technologists
  • Provide technical leadership and support to Marketing, Sales, Operations, Technical Services and customers
  • Provide product issue resolution support (including production blending, product waivers, product failure complaints) and collaborate within the organization to solve problems
  • Develop new and update old products to satisfy customer requirements while allowing for efficient manufacture by identifying customer requirements and translating them into written specifications and manufacturing controls, and working with Manufacturing to minimize production costs
  • Analyze and communicate experimental results both internally and externally to multiple levels of the organization. External communications may include customer and/or industry presentations
  • May be required to liaise with industry to help shape and influence product specifications and industry standards (e.g. ASTM, STLE, Rubber Division ACS, Asphalt Institute, etc.)
  • Interact with component suppliers and customers
  • Evaluate and analyze competitive products to identify threats or benefits to the company, providing a source of industry intelligence
  • Assist with developing R&D plans, and tracking spend versus budgets
  • Adhere to all safety, quality (ISO 9001) and environmental (ISO 14001) standards, procedures and initiatives. Document and maintain records

 

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion

Experience

  • Strong relevant work experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of related job experience and R&D
  • Comprehensive knowledge of petroleum industry and/or related products

Education Level

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field is required

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated laboratory experience
  • Ability to utilize laboratory testing equipment and formulate products to meet a wide range of uses and specifications
  • Aware of technological trends and industry advances
  • Familiar with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001
  • Demonstrated communication skills including strong technical writing and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated project management, leadership and planning skills
  • Ability to work well within a team and independently is critical
  • Innovative, creative and technically savvy with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to perform complex mathematic calculations

PREFERRED SKILLS:

Knowledge of the manufacturing process and process engineering of lubricant and/or oil products (e.g. base oils, process oils, waxes and/or aromatic extracts, etc.) is preferred.  Specific Knowledge of Process oil applications and Specialty product development is also preferred. Specific knowledge of one or more of the following; Compounding of Polymer and Rubber for industrial and tire applications, Asphalt, Chemical Processing,  Agricultural Science, as well as plant and processing equipment experience. The ability to translate this knowledge to other end use markets.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

  • Coordinate laboratory work of technologist within the group
  • Manage contract research expenses to obtain product approvals
  • Provide guidance to junior professional staff

Work Conditions

  • Office and chemical laboratory environment. Refinery based, industrial environment, including, but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, and tanks. Occasional travel by air and land to group meetings, industry meetings and customer sites
