Basic Function

HF Sinclair is seeking a Proces Controls Engineer in WoodCross,UT who will be working in the in the Refining Integrity Team and  responsible for the development, implementation, and monitoring of SIS and controls strategies for HF Sinclair that improves the refineries safety, profitability and efficiency.

Job Duties

 

  • Develops, implements and monitors control strategies that improve refinery safety, profitability and efficiency
  • Provides day-to-day support for process control related issues that impact unit operation
  • Maintains, troubleshoots and documents existing safety instrumented systems to maximize performance
  • Responsible for performance metric reporting in control safety system applications
  • Identifies and develops new control applications by utilizing emerging technologies
  • Works closely with DCS specialists and technicians
  • Performs programming modifications to plant safety instrumented systems
  • Performs detailed troubleshooting on many different controls systems with support of the controls team
  • Responsible for testing safety systems
  • Participates in Refinery Integrity improvement teams
  • Participates as needed in plant Process Safety Management, by supporting Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), action item follow-up and PSSR (Pre-Startup Safety Reviews)
  • Identifies deficiencies in current protective systems and provides plans/projects to improve, modify or replace to meet PSM requirements 
  • Answers calls or side of office hours as needed to support operations
  • Attends training to further Controls and SIS capabilities

 

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their manager, as determined from time to time in their sole and complete discretion.

Experience

A minimum of 2 years of experience in controls.

Oil and Gas industry is preferred.

Knowledge of Burner Management Systems Integration is preferred.   Knowledge of SIS (Safety Instrumented Systems) and the process of deriving SIL ratings would be favored.

Education Level

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering/Technical field.

Required Skills

  • Experience with PLC programming Modicon , Allen Bradley, Honeywell Saftey Manager, Triconix, Honeywell Experion
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products (e.g., Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and commonly used engineering concepts and experience with engineering software
  • Strong ability to effectively communicate with others, both written and verbal communication, advanced reading and writing skills, with the ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations

 

Preferred Skill

  • Strong trouble shooting skills
  • Knowledge of Python, Databases, Script base programming
  • Previous experience with various phases of vendor selection and technical negotiation.
  • Thorough understanding of P&ID symbology and presentation techniques and presentation techniques
  • Performing SIS Calculations
  • Experience with supervision of contractors and maintenance employees for safety system modification and testing is preferred

Supervision of contractors and employees.

Work Conditions

Office and plant based with up to 20% travel by land and air required. Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, and out-of-doors environment including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, rotating equipment, wet and/or oil contaminated conditions, at both below grade and elevated positions, and working in confined spaces. Subject to all temperatures, weather and varying road conditions.

Physical Requirements

Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, lifting and/or carrying up to 50 lbs, climbing up to 200 ft, perceiving color differences, required to wear personal protective equipment as needed and a respirator in emergency situations (beards not permitted). Job conditions may require twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching or grasping.
